Dell Inspiron Duo

With zippier hardware and a better battery, the flip-screen Dell Inspiron Duo could be a solid multimedia tablet/laptop combo.

As you may have guessed, the Inspiron Duo looks like your regular netbook from afar. It’s got a shiny lid — it’ll be available in that “Marlin” blue color as well as in “foggy night” black and “fastback” red — and its plastic edges house the typical ports, including two USB ports and one audio jack. Under the lid it’s got a nice feeling chiclet keyboard that looks quite similar to the one on the Dell Inspiron M101z and a decently sized touchpad with two dedicated mouse buttons. Yep, it sounds like your run-of-the-mill netbook, that is until you take a look at its 10.1-inch, 1366×768-resolution, capacitive touchscreen and push it backwards. When the screen is flipped over and the lid closed, the system launches a touch-friendly interface for interacting with photos, videos, and music, and returns to the basic Windows desktop when the transformation is reversed.

Despite the inventive construction and decent software design, the Duo is far from perfect. This is essentially a Netbook, and even though it has the latest dual-core Intel N550 Atom CPU and 2GB of RAM, it feels slow at times, especially in tablet mode, perhaps exacerbated by the overhead added by the touch hardware. Meanwhile, the system works best when paired with its optional dock, which provides better speakers for music and video playback, useful ports, and holds the system upright for use as an Internet appliance.

However, you still have to take care to turn the screen only in the correct direction, essentially pushing the top of the screen back through the lid. Also, when flipping the screen back, it’s important to make sure the system is open wide enough so you don’t smack the bottom of the screen into the keyboard.

Toshiba ‘World’s First’ Glasses-free 3D TV

Toshiba on Wednesday launched in Japan the world’s first high definition liquid crystal display 3-D television that allows viewers to see 3D images without having to wear special glasses, amid intensifying competition in the market.

Toshiba will offer two sizes – 12 inches and 20 inches – designed for personal use. The technology isn’t advanced enough yet to integrate into larger screens. Toshiba says images on the 12-inch screen are best viewed directly from the front and some 65 centimetres (26 inches) away, making the 3D capability less effective for families that would view together from different points around a room. Also the viewing distance for the 20-inch model is 90 centimeters (35.4 inches).

The smaller model with a liquid crystal display carries a price tag of 119,800 yen (1,400 dollars), and the other will be double the price.

Besides, the Regza GL1 Series also allows users to switch between 2D and 3D on normal TV programmes.

“Customers currently think of 3D images as just an add-on function… but 3D is expected to become a standard eventually” with 3D films and video titles increasing.

Its available in Japan only first when the 3D flatpanels launch in December. But no word on when the Toshiba displays will roll out elsewhere.

LG LW6500 Passive-3D HDTV

It is reported that LG is ready to show the LG LW6500 passive 3D television –the world’s largest (for now) 3D TV. As demos of preproduction units we found the passive 3D effect on TVs worked well, albeit more subject to off-angle issues than active. So it wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one other manufacturer try its hand at the passive 3D technology. Earlier this year LG released a passive 3D model in the UK, the 47LD950, for example. Right now, LG LW6500 Passive-3D HDTV. Let’s hope so!

Rumors: Apple iPad

With the Apple iPad now a sales success, there are a number of interesting rumors which can keep the Apple tablet fanatics interested.Well, among the rumors, many signs are pointing to the release of a refreshed version of Apple’s iPad (aka the iPad 2). Hah, a rumor for the detailed specification of Apple iPad 2.

* Front-facing 640×480 camera with FaceTime chat support
* High-res camera on the back (resolution unknown, probably the same 5MP as the iPhone 4)
* Dual-core CPU based on A9 ARM Cortex platform at 1GHz per core (likely to be branded “A5” by Apple, just to confuse consumers)
* Improved sound, with a larger speaker on the back left corner of the iPad
* Addition of a 3-axis gyroscope to improve gaming and interactivity
* RAM increase from 256MB to 512MB
* Screen size will remain at 9.7-inches – no 7-inch or smaller version plannes
* Possible increase in screen resolution, leveraging “Retina display” tech from iPhone 4 (I have my doubts on the ability to do this on a cost-effective basis yet)
* Slightly reduced body size and a flat back instead of a curved one (time to buy some new cases)
* MicroUSB port to meet European regulations on mobile device chargers
* Pricing likely to remain the same as 1st gen models

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness

Introduction:
Luxury phones are having a tough time being unique nowadays. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is having a hard time being… luxurious. But that’s no way to start a proper review now, is it?

There we go again then. Rare metals and precious stones are commonplace, but a transparent screen? Now, that’s a first. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness keeps only the essential phone functions and that explains the Pureness moniker. And just like a proper luxury phone, it comes with a concierge service.

You can access the concierge service 24/7 via a phone call or email and have them book you a hotel room, buy tickets for a game or ask for advice. But it’s not just a simple booking service – going through the concierge service has some perks, like free room upgrades in some hotels, discounts (well, well), complementary champagne and so on.

You see, the luxury of owning a Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness doesn’t just come from what’s in the phone itself. But since we’re not going to be using the concierge service anytime soon, let’s focus on what the phone has to offer

Key features:
* Quad-band GSM support
* 3G with HSDPA and HSUPA support
* One-of-a-kind transparent greyscale display (1.8", 240 x 320 pixels), scratch-resistant surface
* Very lightweight, only 70 grams
* FM radio with RDS and TrackID
* Bluetooth with A2DP and USB (Fast Port connector)
* 2 GB internal memory
* Smart dialing
* Excellent audio quality

Main disadvantages:
* Small screen is poor on legibility
* Looks cheap and poorly built
* Fast Port instead of 3.5 mm audio jack means limited use as a music player
* Fast 3G connectivity with HSDPA/HSUPA is only usable for tethering
* No camera
* Non-removable battery
* Internal memory not expandable

A phone with a transparent screen is nothing short of unique. But the display certainly is a liability in terms of actually using the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness. It limits the physical space available inside the phone, leaving Sony Ericsson engineers with very little room to work with.

Plus, the low-resolution greyscale display makes a camera (even just a video call camera) and proper web browsing pointless. This leaves tethering as the only reasonable use for the fast 3G data.
Rather it takes the concept of pureness and runs with it – by leaving out all the distracting features. Only the essence of a phone remains and the transparent screen acts as the perfect metaphor for this.

Palm Pre 2 is out in Canada for with 3-year plan

Palm has released Pre 2 in mass availability ahead of CES 2011. This may not be a surprise and Palm has done well catching this week and a half before the holyday shopping season is over. Just one word of warning for those of who will lay their hands upon shiny new Pre 2 in the morning of January 1 – this smartphone comes with a three-year contract. At least now it does. Price is respectively low – at $99 in Canada from Rogers, which is the only carrier selling Pre 2 at the moment of writing, it couldn’t be cheaper, but three years of plan does’t make it a pleasant present which is what really matters right now.

Anyway, it’s a phone, so for a moment we will leave contract aside and remember ourselves what Palm Pre 2 is like as a phone. There are not many smartphone companies left out there who develop their own operating software. Pre 2 runs HP webOS 2 and its performance is yet to see, but there is no doubt that it’s a steady evolution of the original version. So is the hardware. At first glance it is hard to even tell Pre from Pre 2. Their size is almost identical, basic shape is also right there, display has remained of the same size and resolution, so has form factor and it still has its awesome touchstone charging dock. We don’t have any processor figures or RAM/ROM capacities unfortunately, but this is the matter of time. Here is the rest of the specs.

BenQ 3D LED monitor

BenQ took the effort to collaborate with two leading professional gamers to come up with the XL2410T

Lots of companies claim to create monitors meant for video games, but very few take the effort to actually sit down with professional gamers and ask them what would work best for a gaming monitor.

BenQ took the effort to collaborate with two leading professional gamers to come up with the XL2410T – a 24-inch 3D LED gaming monitor, featuring a 16:9 aspect ratio, 2ms response time, and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Every professional gamer knows that lag would cause you to lose a game. XL2410T is specially designed to have a quick response to action. It has a fast refresh rate of 120Hz for higher precision; a low input lag so the shots made are more in sync with the visual on-screen; a quick 2ms GTG (overdrive). Users can see the edge of the enemies clearly and without motion blur, and dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 for detailed images and clarity in both darkened and brightened situations.

The monitor has two hotkeys; one for changing the display mode, Full; Aspect; Overscan; 1:1; 17”; 19”; 19” Widescreen and 22” Widescreen.

The second hotkey is ‘smart scaling’, which lets the users adjust picture size in original input to the screen’s limit.

Together with display mode function, users can play in the resolution size they are accustomed to or adjust their screen size to what their teammates are using for easier communication and reference.

From BenQ’s gaming display modes options, users can choose from FPS Mode, made possible by co-working with the gaming heroes HeatoN and Spawn as the best setting for first person shooting games, or from the two user game modes for more dedicated and personalised settings.

Canon PowerShot A3100 IS

London, UK, 5th January 2010 – Canon today launches the PowerShot A3100 IS and PowerShot A3000 IS, two new digital cameras that are compact, great looking and extremely easy to use. Packed with a range of clever and user-friendly features, the new models make photography more enjoyable than ever, helping users get great shots with the minimum of effort.

With genuine Canon lens technology and DIGIC III processing, the PowerShot A3100 IS and PowerShot A3000 IS offer excellent performance and great value. Both sport a new, slim and lightweight body with an attractive exterior design, combining stand-out looks with a range of intelligent technologies. The PowerShot A3100 IS is available in a selection of bright, attractive colours, offering a choice of blue, red and silver variants, while the PowerShot A3000 IS comes in silver with a subtle black trim. The new models will succeed the current PowerShot A1100 IS, and mark a true step forward for the PowerShot A series line.

Canon quality – both inside and out
The PowerShot A3100 IS features a 12.1 Megapixel imaging sensor, while the lower-cost PowerShot A3000 IS offers 10.0 Megapixels of resolution. Equipped with DIGIC III processing, a 4x optical zoom lens and integrated optical Image Stabilizer, both provide rich, detailed and blur-free images. A bright, 6.7cm (2.7") high resolution LCD screen offers crisp playback, enabling users to frame and review images in pin-sharp clarity.

Both new models also make it easy to capture the perfect shot, thanks to the intelligent Smart Auto mode. Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology recognises up to 18 different scenes and automatically applies the optimum settings required to capture the best picture.

Smart Auto also includes i-Contrast technology, which analyses images to deliver perfect exposure, adding brightness and detail to darker sections without blowing out correctly-exposed areas. Additionally, Canon’s Easy mode provides super-simple settings for beginners, deactivating most of the buttons and removing icons from the screen for straightforward point-and-shoot photography.

Smart Flash Exposure improves natural and ambient lighting in every shot, intelligently adjusting flash exposure to suit the subject and the shooting conditions. In daylight, for example, Smart Flash Exposure will detect and eliminate harsh facial shadows created when light reaches people at an angle, automatically engaging the flash to brighten up any poorly lit features. Flash power is also controlled during macro shooting, preventing over exposure and retaining image detail of subjects shot from a very short distance.

Face Detection Technology makes it easy to take pictures of friends, tracking faces and providing correct exposure and focus for the best results. Face Select & Track allows one face to be given priority over others in a group if required, while Red-Eye Correction identifies and corrects red eyes, making sure everyone looks their best. The smart FaceSelf-Timer feature allows the photographer to be included in group photos, only taking the shot when an extra face has entered the frame.

Creative shooting with minimum effort
A range of creative shooting features includes the new Low Light mode, which provides improved performance in challenging lighting conditions at 2.0 Megapixel resolution. The new Super Vivid mode injects new life into subjects, adding colour to images to provide a dramatic, enriched effect. The cameras also feature the new Poster Effect mode, which reduces the number of colours to create retro-looking, poster-style images.

The PowerShot A3100 IS makes it easy to navigate menus, with on-screen Hints & Tips providing simple explanations of camera functions for superb ease-of-use.

In addition to high-quality images, both the PowerShot A3100 IS and the PowerShot A3000 IS capture video at VGA resolution with sound, offering users the ability to go beyond stills. Both models feature comprehensive software packages, including an integrated YouTube™ upload function, for sharing videos online quickly and easily.

For the first time in a PowerShot A series model, the new models both feature Lithium-ion battery packs. Lightweight and rechargeable, Lithium-ion battery packs are slim and easier to carry, and provide the convenience of being able to be charged on demand. Both cameras are also compatible with SDHC and SDXC storage cards, offering up to 2TB (SDXC only) of convenient and reliable memory that users can take anywhere.

CANON iMAGE GATEWAY – share your stories
Owners of the new PowerShot A3100 IS and PowerShot A3000 IS are entitled to free
membership of CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video. Users can take advantage of up to 2GB of personal storage capacity, creating enough room for hundreds of high-quality images. Mobile browsing is also supported, making it easy for friends and family to view photos on the move.
